In anticipation of Gordon Lightfoots 80th birthday, Nanaimo drummer and composer James McRae has arranged a musical tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. McRae’s “Impressions of Lightfoot” recognizes the importance of Gordon Lightfoot’s deep and everlasting contribution to Canada’s musical culture and heritage. The band features three of Canada’s most highly regarded and sought after musicians; Jennifer Scott, Nico Rhodes, and Ken Lister.

This musical adventure reflects James McRae’s individualistic musical personality. He’s collaborated with four Nanaimo musical talents; Nico Rhodes, Patrick Courtin, Marisha Devoin, and Marty Steele on these fresh arrangements. Gordon Lightfoot songs such as ‘Early Morning Rain’, ‘Song For A Winters Night’, and ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’, are just a few of this legendary singer-songwriter’s works being covered in this tribute. Of note, Lightfoot started out with aspirations to be a jazz drummer. However, for over half a century he’s become best known for his gentle guitar accompaniment to his melodic stories of life. McRae says, “I’m excited to perform these shows with three of my closest musical friends.”

Vancouver vocalist Jennifer Scott, specializes in Jazz, Blues, and World Music and is considered to be one of today’smost important jazz artists working in Canada and the USA. She has played with Gene Bertoncini, Clark Terry, and Kenny Wheeler. “Scott has set herself apart from the jazz-vocalist pack with mesmerizing renditions of the most unlikely tunes.” — Jazz Times, http://www.jenniferscott.ca.

West coast bassist Ken Lister is a Canadian treasure. He’s an outstanding bass player whose ability on both acoustic and electric is a rarity on today’s music scene. Ken has played with Phil Dwyer, Hugh Fraser, and Don Thompson to name just a few, while having won a couple of juno awards for jazz music recordings he’s also played on. http://www.kenlister.me

West coast pianist Nico Rhodes is a music director, studio musician, arr./orch., composer, pianist and woodwind player who brings an enormous wealth of musical experience to this project. “Breathtakingly fresh sounds and style radiate from this young musician whose hands effortlessly fly across a keyboard leaving us in utter amazement and jumping to our feet at the end of a solo!” Valley Hennell, promoter.
