About Island Jazz
Island Jazz was started in March 2009 by Victoria writer Rick Gibbs to cover the jazz scene in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, and throughout coastal BC. The site features information on jazz events, runs profiles of musicians, and offers insight into all aspects of the west coast Canadian jazz scene.
Articles written by Rick Gibbs have appeared in Monday Magazine, Coda, Boulevard Magazine and Penguin Eggs. As well, he wrote, produced, and narrated Kindred Spirits, a one-hour CBC radio documentary on the musical relationship between guitarist Pat Metheny and Canadian guitar builder Linda Manzer.
He’s the author of The Perfect Guitar: A Journey of Discovery in a Guitar Maker’s Workshop, published by Cadence House Press; and is working on Something in the Water: Profiles in West Coast Canadian Jazz, slated for publication in the coming year. He lives with his wife in Victoria, where, when he’s not writing, he studies jazz guitar.
