May There Be Jazz

May 20, 2011 Comments off

May is turning out to be a heck of month for jazz in Victoria. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s yet to come:

Bob Murphy

Piano and B3 master Bob Murphy rolls into town from Vancouver to join Joey Smith on bass and Kelby MacNayr on drums for an Art of the Trio performance on Saturday, May 21 at 8 pm at Hermann’s in Victoria. Murphy’s list of credits is a mile long and includes everyone from Stevie Wonder to Freddie Hubbard. Not to be missed! Tickets $15/$12/$10. Reservations recommended: 250 388-9166.

Kevin Dean

The PJ Perry(sax)/Kevin Dean(trumpet) Quintet featuring Neil Swainson on bass, Mark Eisenman on piano, and Andre White on drums hits the Hermann’s stage as part of their cross-Canada tour on Sunday, May 22 at 8 pm. Comprised of five of the best jazz musicians in North America, this quintet is astounding in the breadth and depth of its collective talent and experience. To see them in the intimacy of Hermann’s for a ticket price of only $15 is quite simply the jazz steal of the year. Don’t miss it and definitely make a reservation. 250 388-9166

Three-time National Jazz Award winning vocalist Joe Coughlin launches his new CD Slow and Slower with his quintet on Saturday, May 28th (8 pm) and Sunday, May 29th (4:30 pm) at Hermann’s in Victoria. Coughlin, who has been compared to Tony Bennett, Johnny Hartman and Frank Sinatra,  has one of the best voices in the business, and he’ll be appearing with a killer band featuring Pat Coleman on guitar, Ken Lister on bass, Buff Allen on drums, and Tony Genge on piano. Tickets $15/$12.  As with the other shows, reservations are highly recommended for this “best of the year” performance. 250 388-9166.
