A Solo Jazz Pianist You Don’t Want to Miss

October 8, 2009

chris_donnelly_headshot3Make sure you catch Juno-nominated solo pianist Chris Donnelly either Friday night at  Hermann’s in Victoria ( 8 pm) or Sunday at the Church of the Advent’s Jazz Vespers series in Colwood ( 7 pm).

Donnelly is an accomplished and entertaining player from Toronto who is currently on his second western Canadian tour. Last year he wowed Victoria audiences with his skill and unique take on a number of standards and original tunes.

Donnelly graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s in Jazz Performance in 2007.  Since then he’s picked up top placements in two major international jazz piano competitions, a couple of National Jazz Award nominations, two Canada Council grants, and a 2009 Juno Award nomination for his debut album Solo.  Not bad for a 25 year old.

He’s an inspiring and engaging player who, on this tour, will be performing music written and inspired by the  late Canadian great Doug Riley (aka Dr. Music). Highlights will include Peace Dance, Dinosaurus, and Child Eyes from Riley’s solo piano album Freedom.

Donnelly  also plans to record an album based on the works of graphic artist M.C. Escher in the new year and will likely feature some of that material as well.

He’ll also be giving a piano workshop at Tom Lee Music on Friday afternoon at 4pm.

More info can be had here.
