Jazz Around the Island (Sept. 25-27)

September 24, 2009

The Gillian Stone Quintet, a mid-Island group featuring Gillian Stone on vocals, Cameron Wigmore on sax, Trevor Davies on guitar, Shawn Daikin on bass and Johnny Lucas on drums, plays at Hermann’s in Victoria on Friday night and the Vault Coffee House in downtown Nanaimo on Saturday.

Also on Saturday you can hear Crossing Borders, a much heralded Canadian-American ensemble, featuring Canadian jazz vocalist/pianist Jennifer Scott and S.F. Bay Area saxophonist Kristen Strom, with guitarist Scott Sorkin (Count Basie Orchestra, Steve Turre & Michael Turre, Smith Dobson, Louie Bellson), bassist Rene Worst (Chet Baker, Joe Pass, Paul Horn, Freddie Hubbard), and drummer Jason Lewis (Boz Scaggs, Taylor Eigsti, Kurt Elling). Crossing Borders will kick off the Sylvan United Jazz Vespers season in Mill Bay in the afternoon (4:30 pm) on Saturday and then head down island to Victoria for an evening gig at Hermann’s (8 pm). They play the Roxy Theatre on Gabriola Island on Sunday (7:30 pm) and then appear at the Duncan Garage Showroom on Monday night at 8pm before heading back to the mainland for shows in Washington State, Nelson and Vernon.

On Sunday night at Hermann’s Kelby MacNayr and Friends, namely pianist George
McFetridge, saxophonist Roy Styffe , bassist Sean Drabitt, and drummer MacNayr explore some of the great tunes of the American Songbook.

Juno-award winning bassist Brandi Disterheft appears with her group on Friday night at the Rifflandia Festival in Market Square in Victoria, Saturday night at The Cambie in Nanaimo and Sunday evening in Courtenay at the Elk’s Hall Jazz Club. (see related story).

All in all a pretty good weekend for jazz on the Island.

The Gillian Stone Jazz Quintet is also performing Saturday Sept 26th at The Vault Coffee House in downtown Nanaimo.

A bit about us: The band is led by vocalist Gillian Stone, a vocal student in the music program at VIU. All of the band members are 4th year music students currently studying at VIU. You can hear samples of our sound by going to
http://www.myspace.com/cameronwigmore and listening to “But Beautiful” and “Moment’s Notice”.

With soulful funky jazz grooves, Brazilian bossa novas and romantic vocal jazz ballads, the band’s sound could be summed up as far out jazz and funky beats.

Our repertoire includes original compositions as well as great jazz songs including Gentle Rain, Thou Swell, No More Blues, It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing and Sweet Georgia Brown.

The show at Hermann’s was well attended and we had a blast. Hooray for Hermann’s!
