"Jazz in the Garden" at Milner Gardens near Qualicum will be a key part of the new Phil Dwyer Jazz Festival

Saxophonist/pianist Phil Dwyer has added a jazz festival to the growing list of programs he’s developing in the Qualicum-Parksville area of Vancouver Island.

The Phil Dwyer Jazz Festival, which runs from July 19 to August 16, will feature some of the top names in Canadian jazz, including Ingrid and Christine Jensen, Seamus Blake, Michel Donato, PJ Perry, Don Thompson, Ken Lister, and of course, Dwyer himself.

There will also be appearances from the Amanda Tosoff Quartet, the Marc Atkinson Trio, vocalist Joani Taylor, trumpeter Jon Challoner, and virtuoso U.S. drummers Jon Wikan and Alan Jones.

Many of the advanced students from Dwyer’s jazz camps will also perform, including players from his newly-launched adult camp and from his program catering to top-level university students.

The festival gets underway with a performance by the Amanda Tosoff Quartet on Sunday, July 19 in Parksville and culminates in a five-hour Jazz in the Garden show at Milner Gardens in Qualicum on August 16.

Special events include Words and Music with the legendary Don Thompson in which Thompson will discuss and demonstrate his approach to playing, and PJ Perry, a Life in Music, which will feature a conversation with the jazz great reflecting on his long career.
