The VCM Summer Jazz Workshop Offers a Raft of Public Concerts Featuring Some of the Biggest Names in Canadian Jazz

JA3With one Victoria jazz festival put to bed for the year, another one is already up and about, offering students, residents, and visitors some of the best jazz to be found anywhere in the country.

For the next week the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s (VCM) Summer Jazz Workshops (SJW) will feature its award-winning national and international faculty in a series of mid-day and evening concerts open to the public.

The series already got underway Wednesday night at Hermann’s with a much-anticipated appearance by the Misha Piatigorsky Trio, featuring Willard Dyson on drums, Sean Drabitt on bass and Piatigorsky on piano, with guest appearances from saxophonist Gordon Clements and vocalist Gergana Velinova.

Here’s a quick summary of the other shows coming up over the next week.

Evening Show

The Gordon Clements Collective featuring Don Thompson, Neil Swainson, Rob Cheramy, Willard Dyson , Misha Piatigorsky and special guest Gergana Velinova appears Saturday, July 11 at 8pm at the Metro Theatre ($10/$15).

Mid-Day Series

And then during the week there will be a series of shows at 11:30 am every day at the Alix Goolden Hall. Admission is free for SJW students and $15 for the general public:

An All-Faculty Jam Session, featuring the above players plus Ian McDougall, Walter Martella, Louise Rose, Joey Smith, Damian Graham, and Ross Taggart happens at Alix Goolden Hall on Monday, July 13.

It’s Ian McDougall and Ross Taggart on Tuesday, July 14

Above and Below, another kind if trio, with Gord Clements, Misha Piatigorsky and Neil Swainson on Wednesday, July 15.

The Gergana Velinova Quartet appears on Thursday, July 16.

The Don Thompson Trio performs on Friday, July 17.

Market Square Show

On Saturday, July 18 at 2:30 pm in Market Square six student jazz combos will appear under the direction of the faculty. That one is free.

Additional Evening Shows

Don Thompson will host the Summer Jazz Faculty in small group settings at Alix Goolden Hall on Friday July 17 at 8 pm. ($15, $20)

The Summer Jazz Faculty Big Band, hosted by Misha Piatigorsky and featuring soloist Louise Rose, appears on Saturday, July 18 at 8 pm at Alix Goolden Hall ($15, $20).

In addition to all of this The Superior Cafe will host a series of jam sessions after 10 pm every night during the week that will feature students and probably some faculty as well.

    I liked the article about great guitar duos and know most of the recordings mentioned but I wanted to
    add one of my faves with Dave Young and Lennie Breau, Live At Burbon Street.
    Thanks for the info. I am an Edmonton jazz player
    looking to move west sometime.
