Tasty Items on the Holiday Jazz Menu

May 15, 2009

Whatever your taste in jazz, you are likely to find something that pleases on the South Island this Victoria Day weekend.

Got a hankering for big-voiced vocals in the Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin traditions? Emily Braden, who has been bouncing back and forth between New York and Victoria all year, caps off the Church of the Advent’s Jazz Vespers series out in Colwood on Sunday at 7pm in a special performance with her trio.

Or maybe you prefer the hip jazz-rock sounds pioneered in the 1970’s by Steely Dan?  You won’t be able to hear the original band,  but the Pretzel Logic Orchestra, featuring the likes of Joey Smith on bass, Karel Roessingh on keys and Toni Hammond on vocals offers up a darn good substitute as they navigate the complex harmonic and melodic waters of Steely Dan’s original tunes, like Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.

Maybe it’s Latin and Worldbeat sounds that get you moving?  Turiya Mareya’s weekly Worldbeat Music Showcase features Latin vocalist Anna Acevedo Lyman and the Santana-sounding Coco Jafro this Sunday night at Hermann’s starting at 8 pm (followed by an open worldbeat jam session at 10pm).

Prefer your jazz a little more straight ahead?  As previously announced on this site, the Phil Dwyer Trio, featuring Dwyer on piano, Ken Lister on bass and Jesse Cahill on drums performs a tribute to the great jazz piano trios from Oscar Peterson to Bill Evans at Sylvan United Church in Mill Bay on Sunday evening at 7pm.

And finally, if your tastes lean more towards big band sounds, don’t forget the “Prelude to a Fest” fundraiser (also mentioned on this site) on Salt Spring on Saturday night at ArtSpring, featuring Swing Shift, the big band directed by Monik Nordine.

Details for these shows and more can be found by clicking on the appropriate links found in the “Jazz Links” sidebar of this site.  Enjoy your weekend!
