Jensen Sisters to Perform at the National Jazz Awards

April 9, 2009

cover_photo_-_promoIngrid and Christine Jensen, two of Vancouver Island’s most successful jazz musicians, are slated to perform at the National Jazz Awards in Toronto on May 14.

Ingrid will travel from her home in New York and Christine from Montreal to join a slate of outstanding performers that includes Vic Vogel, Denny Christianson and Darcy James Argue.

2008-cj1_sThe Jensen’s, of course, are jazz royalty in these parts, since both have established prominent international careers after growing up outside Nanaimo in Cedar. Ingrid is considered one of the most original trumpet and flugelhorn players on the scene today, and Christine, an outstanding saxophonist, has made her mark as a highly successful composer, arranger and bandleader.

They frequently tour together, work on each others projects, and are key members of Nordic Connect, a Canadian/Swedish/American quintet that delivers jazz with a distinct Scandinavian sensibility.

Although Ingrid and Christine have long lived in the east, both frequently return to the Island to play, teach, and connect with family, and Christine says that she often draws on her Island roots for her composing.

In fact, writing from Montreal, she reports that she’s heading into the recording studio with her big band in a few weeks along with Ingrid as a guest soloist. “We will be recording music that contains a ton of reference to my growing up on the Island.”

The sisters have also completed a new CD with Nordic Connect and are gearing up to launch it very soon. As well, they have plans to return to the Island this summer, where they’ll be teaching at Phil Dwyer’s jazz camp in Qualicum. They also hope to put together another fundraiser for jazz in the Nanaimo area at the end of July.

Links to their websites can be found in The Players section of Island Jazz, and you can learn more about Nordic Connect and listen to a few recordings at http://www.myspace.com/nordicconnect
