Drivin’ (and Sailin’) with The Pat Coleman Quintet

April 3, 2009

We can talk all we want about the likes of Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar but let’s not forget Pat Coleman. This legendary guitarist has played with everybody who is anybody, and is considered by other guitarists to be one of the great hidden treasures of the jazz guitar universe (hidden away in Nanaimo that is, after many years in Toronto).

Well, he’s out in the open, and he’s currently on tour with a killer quintet featuring Mike Allen and Monik Nordine on saxophones and Ken Lister and Buff Allen on bass and drums respectively. You can catch Pat and the group on Saturna Island tonight (Friday, April 3) and in Victoria at Hermann’s tomorrow (Saturday, April 4)). They head up to Courtenay on April 10 and hit Lasqueti Island on April 11.

Quick update: Ken Lister reports that their gig at The Cellar in Vancouver on Thursday went well for a first night and they are looking forward to the rest of their shows.
