Some Local Jazz News
I haven’t posted for awhile and so I thought I’d update you on a few bits of news that have come my way recently.
Hot on the heels of the release of The Very Thought of You, his stellar string orchestra album that has already seen sales of 1000 copies with orders from Japan, England and the U.S, trombonist Ian McDougall is preparing to mix a new live album recorded at The Cellar in March. The Ian McDougall 12tet includes twelve of the best players on the west coast, including Phil Dwyer, Ross Taggart, Brad Turner, and Cam Ryga. Look for an album release and possibly a tour of this supergroup sometime in the fall.
Vocalist Joe Coughlin goes into the studio in August with Toronto pianist Mark Eisenman to record a duo album. A salute to the great duo work of Bill Evans and Tony Bennett, the recording will mark Coughlin’s 30-year anniversary working with Eisenman, one of the most respected pianists in the country. They’ll record in Victoria at Electric City Sound. This will be Coughlin’s eighth album.
Bryn Badel and his Lust Life Jazz Band have a new album out also recorded live-off-the-floor at Electric City. On Remembrance features the solid instrumental work of Steve Grebanier (guitar), Ryan Tandy (bass), and Paul Wainwright (sax), with Badel on trumpet and vocals. Including everything from W.C Handy’s St. Louis Woman to Gershwin’s A Foggy Day, it’s an eclectic, wide-ranging mix sure to please fans of the Lust Life Jazz Band.
It ain’t jazz but Karel Roessingh has been busy producing the new Valdy album read between the lines (now out) that features musicians from across Canada but also some familiar jazz players in Victoria, including Joey Smith, Kelby MacNayr, Nick LaRiviere and Maureen Washington. Roessingh and Valdy will be doing a concert to benefit the bursary programme for Metchosin International Summer School for the Arts, on July 6th, 8 pm, at the Max Bell Theatre at Pearson College. They’ll also be giving workshops that weekend with Valdy covering performance skills and Roessingh demystifying composition. More info at <http://www.missa.ca/workshops/>
