Jazz Around the Island (Nov. 13-19)
The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Jazz Studies department presents jazz trombonist Steve Turre in concert on Monday, November 16, 2009, at 8:00 pm in the Malaspina Theatre on the VIU campus in Nanaimo. Turre will be accompanied by VIU faculty members Bob Murphy on piano, Ken Lister on bass and Jesse Cahill on drums. In addition to being part of NBC’s Saturday Night Live show orchestra, Turre has a long line of performance credits, including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Dizzy Gillespie, and is a major jazz voice in his own right. Tickets are $20 general and $17 for students and seniors and will be available at Tom Lee Music and Fascinatin� Rhythm and at the door. Special group rates are possible. Turre will also conduct a two hour clinic and master class on Tuesday November 17, at 10:30 at the Malaspina Campus of Vancouver Island University in room 105 in building 320 that is free and open to the public. Hermann’s in Victoria has several great shows coming up in the next week, including the Rob Ahad Trio, featuring Kelby MacNayr on drums, James Young on bass and Ahad on vocals and piano (Sat. Nov. 14, 8pm/$10). Ahad is a relative newcomer to the Victoria jazz scene via Montreal and Osaka, Japan. He’ll be performing a mix of original compositions and standards. Read more about him here.
Also at Hermann’s vocalist Kim Pacheco performs with the Tom Vickery Trio (Mon. Nov. 16/8pm).
The Ernesto Cervini Quartet, hailing from New York and Toronto, appears on Thurs. Nov.19 (8 pm) at Hermann’s. Drummer Cervini has worked with the likes of Clark Terry, Phil Nimmons and Benny Golson and performs regularly at clubs like Birdland and The Jazz Standard. His quartet features saxophonist Joel Frahm, who has carved a major reputation on New York bandstands, performing with everybody from Brad Meldhau, Maynard Ferguson, and Betty Carter to Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Ingrid Jensen. Monik Nordine and Departure appear at the Jazz Vespers series at the Church of the Advent in Colwood on Sun.Nov. 15 (7pm). Departure is a collaboration between saxophonist Nordine and bassist Phill Albert and also features Brent Jarvis on piano and Sherry Clayton on drums. More info can be had here.
